John & Jennifer met at the intersection of Art + Architecture when they began designing an art-house cinema in a small Cambridge, MA firm together. They sought to make a building as creative as the art films that would be shown there. Inspired by the idea of projected light, they created a wave motion motif that they carried into the design of the details – including the custom light fixtures, carpet and tile patterns, and the acoustic and wood panelling and cabinetry. The building won an ASID award and was published in Boston Magazine.

John and Jennifer immediately found that they shared a similar way of seeing the world and designing buildings and in 1998, their partnership turned personal when they decided to marry.

Their honeymoon was a wonderful adventure of art and architecture – sketching and photographing in Praque, Vienna, Venice, Florence, and the Island of Capri, Italy.

In 2003 John and Jennifer founded studio J2 architects because they realized that they performed their best work together and wanted to eliminate the separation of their private and work life.

Lincoln Massachusetts has a strong and distinguished tradition of Modernism, as many famous modernist architects have lived and built there. studio J2 architects is located in Lincoln and enjoys building on and re-inventing its tradition.

John and Jennifer were fortunate to have been sent on a client-sponsored design research trip to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto Japan. They were struck by the exquisite attention to detail and complete manifestation of beauty in simplicity they found there. They understood why a road they visited in Kyoto was described as the most beautiful street in the world. This experience has had a profound influence on their work.

“I honestly feel that no one can surpass the passion and energy we bring to the design process. The process of design, from programming and research through construction really gets us charged. We love what we do for a living.” – John Lynch
